This event is co-hosted by MEP Julie Ward (S&D) and the EP Intergroup on Public Services and Common Goods, in cooperation with the Doc Next Network and the European Cultural Foundation
On behalf of the MEP Julie Ward, the Doc Next Network and the European Cultural Foundation, we warmly invite you to take part in the media showcase Radical Democracy – Citizens from Poland, Spain, Turkey and the UK Reclaim their Cities, which will be followed by a debate.
We will share and discuss inspiring and engaging stories from people who care for urban commons and through their work highlight a variety of local struggles centered on the topic of the commons as a source of a revitalised democratic culture. The three themes of the discussion will be reclaiming homes, public space and political parties.
On the occasion of the European elections in May 2014, the Radical Democracyproject invited media makers, social activists and critical thinkers to submit audiovisual media works about the Europe they would like to live in. The 250 videos submitted expressed a profound, widespread desire to remake democracy from the bottom up by claiming public spaces, occupying buildings, renovating neglected parks and reshaping them all with a radical democratic spirit and principles.
With this showcase and debate, we aim to contribute to the dialogue between Members of the European Parliament, media makers, campaigners, activists and citizens from Poland, Spain, Turkey and the UK, for improving our democracy through enfranchising citizens to reclaim and improve the urban commons.

Imagining the Commons
16 June at 20:00 at Aleppo, Brussels. We bring together recently made videos from Doc Next Network’s Radical Democracy project with critical reflections from a.o. Prof Christian Iaione and Carlos Delclós. Imagining the Commons is a conversation about the urban commons. Is there a commons in European cities? How can we see it? Can it be governed?
