About our call
What is this call about?
This is a call for action! Together, we need to strengthen Europe and make it a better place. A united, democratic, free and open Europe, that’s what we aim for. And imagination is what we need to get us there. This call therefore supports creative, daring and above all concrete actions prior, during and after the European elections. This call is not for funding arts-only project proposals.
Why do we launch this call?
Because now is the time to contribute with your creative ideas and cultural actions to the values we believe the European Union stands for: openness, democracy, solidarity. Europe is under attack. In May, the European Parliamentary elections will decide our common future. We – and all of you – face nationalists and enemies of liberalism who want to close Europe, make it exclusive and less democratic. We believe it’s not too late to wake up people, unite them and support them in their actions that ultimately lead to an open, inclusive and more democratic Europe.
Who can apply?
Anyone above 18 years old can submit a proposal, as long as it has a clear cultural and European dimension, and fits our theme and urgency. This call is open to individuals and organisations from all over the world.
How big are the grants?
The grants may range from 5.000 Euro to 30.000 Euro (for individuals) and from 5.000 Euro up to 50.000 Euro (for organisations). We encourage applicants to submit budgets that accurately reflect the scope of their proposal.
When is the deadline of the call?
The call is ongoing with no deadlines until the available budget is spent. Please follow our online channels to see how much funding is left. We will update this regularly. Applications are assessed on a first come, first serve basis. However, priority is given to applications related to and taking place before or during the EU Parliamentary elections during 23-26 May 2019.
Important notice: Strand A of this call - projects directly related to the EU Parliament Elections - closes on Monday 8 April 2019, midday Central European Time. After that, it is only possible to apply for strand B.
What kind of projects will you support?
Funding is possible for almost everything: start-up funding, co-funding or filling a budgetary gap. We can cover anything from HR costs, to material- or travel costs, as long as your project and budget is clear and concrete.
What is the duration period of these grants?
These grants should be actioned and spent during 2019.
Eligibility and selection criteria
Do I need to submit my proposal in English?
Yes, proposals need to be submitted in English. However, we are not going to focus on your grammar skills and are used to assessing proposals by both native and non-native speakers. We are looking into offering future calls in other European languages as well.
Am I eligible to apply if I am not based in the EU?
Yes, you are eligible to apply as long as the content of your proposal relates to our call “Democracy Needs Imagination”. We don’t have any geographical restrictions.
Can I submit more than one proposal?
You can apply with only one application per individual or organisation.
Can I apply as a current grantee of your foundation?
Yes, current grantees are eligible to apply.
Can I apply if I don’t have a bank account?
No, you cannot apply without having a bank account. You need to have a bank account that we can deposit money into from the Netherlands, where we are based.
Completing the budget
There are two sheets in the budget template. If you have other funding or in kind funds you can add them in the overview sheet.
Can I get a copy of the application questions before I fill out the application?
Yes, you can find a copy of the application questions here. We recommend you to download this document and fill in the answers before going to the online form (see also next question).
Can I save a draft of my application on the site if I want to edit it later?
No. It is not possible to save a draft of your application online. We therefore recommend drafting your application in advance and cut and paste the contents into the online application form.
Can I send changes or additional documents once I have submitted the application?
No, unfortunately we are not able to process any adaptions or additional documents for your applications. This is due to the large number of applications we receive. So please carefully review before pressing the submit button.
When will I hear back from you?
We aim to assess your application within four weeks after the submission. Proposals related to the EU elections will go into the fast track and will be treated with priority. Decisions are final and we hope you understand that we cannot enter into any correspondence regarding unsuccessful applications.
Please note: We do not accept additional information sent via email.
